My Work

Brenda McKaig is a self-taught traditional fiber artist who raises her own flock of “fleecy friends” (Finnsheep) to provide the wool for her fiber creations. The beauty of her Appalachian mountain home keeps her focus on the rhythms of nature. Vividly changing seasons provide her color palette. The Spirit of the Lord enables her.

Brenda is well known as "The Spinning Lady". Over the years she has traveled many miles to teach and demonstrate hand spinning to school, church and civic organizations. She has participated in many Heritage Day events, Folk Festivals, working artist shows, county fairs and Ag Day demonstrations. She has hosted over 3500 folks at her "Field Trips to the Farm".
In 2004, she was featured in Delta's Sky magazine in an article entitled, "A Good Yarn", written by artist and friend, Lynn Coulter.
In 2007, she traveled to Kenya to work with fiber artists there in setting up a studio for yarn production. Those yarns are now available in her studio! All proceeds go back to the business in Kenya.
You may have seen her featured on a couple of locally produced TV spots here in the Chattanooga area, the lastest being "This N That" with Don Welch.
She is a recipient of the Georgia Arts Council Traditional Arts Apprenticeship program grant. The purpose of this grant is to teach an apprentice so that the 'old timey crafts' are not lost. She has taught advanced hand spinning, beginner weaving and natural dyeing through this program. Any Georgia resident interested in becoming an apprentice should give her a call. It requires a commitment of approximately 40 - 50 hours.
